Region Band Auditions UPDATE

Due to the weather issues last week, Region Auditions have been rescheduled for this weekend. Check the calendar for your new audition time: Phase 1 or single-auditions on Friday, 12/14, and Phase 2 auditions on Saturday, 12/15, all at Alvin High School.

The Region Band Clinic & Concert has been moved to January 25-26, 2018 at Clear Lake High School.  Please make sure you are available on these dates before you continue with your audition.

For those who advance to Area, those audtions will be held on January 12 at Clements High School.

MARCHING SEASON WRAP-UP

The band staff would like to thank all of the students, parents, family, and friends for a great competitive marching season.

The number of parents (especially freshman parents) who stepped up and volunteered this year has been awesome!  We welcome the new faces joining with the experienced (not old) ones to help move this organization along.  If you have not had a chance to chaperon a game or volunteer on a committee, please step up and participate where you can.  You will not regret it!  Not only will you learn more about the band and its directors, but you will get to meet many wonderful parents with which you have things in common.  You will be amazed at how many lifelong friendships have developed between band parents simply because their children were in band together.

Contrary to what many believe, our year is not over.  We turn the page and get ready for the Holiday Parade and Winter Concert.  We also have a number of students who will be auditioning for a spot in region band.  Please check the calendar weekly to see if there are updates.

2017 REGION BAND RESULTS

FROM 2015:

Please join us in congratulating the following students on their success this audition season. 18 Charger band students made Area, Region, District, and/or 9th Grade Region. This year we had the highest number of students to advance to Area Auditions in the history of Clear Springs High School, tripling the number of students who advanced in previous years. Megan Chu, Felix Fang, Alexander Falks, Richard Zhou, Lucas Raleigh, and Gilberto Torres now advance to the Area audition in January for the chance to join the top 1% of musicians in Texas in one of the All-State Bands or Orchestras. Also, special congratulations to Megan Chu and Alexander Falks for making 1st chair on their respective instruments at the Region 17 auditions on December 12.

We are extremely proud of all our students and very happy to see them recognized for their dedication and hard work on such a competitively difficult endeavor. TMEA Region 17 has earned a reputation across the state as having some of the most talented musicians in Texas. These 18 students represent the top 15-20% of those who auditioned in their respective sections in the region.

Those students who earned Area and Region honors will perform a concert on Saturday, January 20, at Santa Fe High School (more details on the band calendar). Students with District or 9th Grade Region honors do not perform a concert. District and 9th Grade patches have already been distributed to students. Region patches will be handed out at the January concert and Area patches will be handed out at the audition in January.

Area/Region/District Honors:
Alexander Falks – Bassoon

Region/District Honors:
Zach Graves – Bb Clarinet

District Honors:
Mackenzie Gaona – Flute

9th Grade Region Honors:
Gannon Allen – Trombone
We appreciate the work of all students who auditioned. If your child did not audition, they will have the opportunity to do so again next fall.

TEXAS MUSIC SCHOLARS

The Texas Music Scholar Award designates students in high school music programs who exemplify attributes of meritorious performance in the areas of scholarship, musicianship, and citizenship in their school and community during the 2018-2019 school year.

Last year fewer than 2100 students were named as Texas Music Scholars.  The following students were nominated for this honor by Mr. Williams, and the award was granted by the Texas Music Educators Association, which sponsors the Texas All-State Bands, Orchestras, and Choirs:

Gannon Allen, 10th Grade, Tenor Trombone

Garrett Allen, 12th Grade, Tenor Trombone

Designation is attained by TMEA Active Member recommendation of students in grades 9-12 who have met the following criteria during the current school year:

  • Is a viable member of the school’s parent musical organization for the entire school year.
  • Maintains in all cumulative coursework an overall “A” average as defined by the local school district for the current school year.
  • Maintains academic eligibility for the entire school year.
  • Participates in all scheduled events of the parent organization.
  • Attends, as an audience member, two director-approved concert events of high school, collegiate or professional level during a school year.

  • Performs a UIL Prescribed Music List Class 1 solo for a competition or public performance.

Humanitarian Aid for Venezuela

Dear CSHS Charger Band Families,

Venezuela is going through a severe economic and humanitarian crises. The population is facing severe shortages of food and medicine.

Vulnerable Venezuelans, especially children, are suffering the most. Many of us, even with the best planning, could not survive in a country where something that cost $1.00 last year costs one million dollars today. Their hyper inflation is making simple things like replacing a worn out sock or finding healthy food nearly impossible.

Please consider bringing a donation the night of our Spring Concert. There will be a box placed in front of the PAC labeled “Donations for Venezuela.”

We’ll be also accepting donations from Now until May 30th in the band hall using this same box.

Items we are accepting include:

  • Non-Perishable Foods: Canned Foods, Grains, Pastas, Soups, Energy Bars, Nutritional Bars, Baby Formula and Baby Food.
  • Medicines: Over the counter medications (such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen) vitamins, Feminine Products and First Aide items.
  • Clothing/Other: Gently used Clothes, Shoes, Diapers, Hygienic Supplies, and Toys.

Collected items will be funneled through the Red Cross into the country.

NOTE for National Spanish Honor Society (NSHS) Students: You can get points for bringing items! Please email Amy Dunklee or tell Sra. Moss or Sra. Alarc n if you are bringing items for point opportunities.

CONCERT UNIFORM COLLECTION

We will begin collecting Concert Uniforms on Monday, May 20th.

  • Uniforms must be cleaned and then returned to school on the hanger/s.
  • Write student’s name on a piece of paper and attach the paper to the hanger.
  • Return clean uniforms to the rack in the middle of the uniform closet.
  • DON’T FORGET TO RETURN YOUR GARMENT BAG! You may return your clean uniform in your garment bag if you still have one checked out.
  • Do not hang uniforms on perimiter racks or leave out in the band hall! Your uniform must be checked in on the computer or it will be flagged as missing!

Uniforms must be turned in by Friday, May 24th or you will be added to the Clear Springs High School fine and fee list.

Easy Washing Instructions

  • Release hems.
  • Wash jacket/pants/dress in cold water with a mild detergent.
  • Avoid using strong scents or fabric softeners. The next student may be allergic!
  • Dry on LOW HEAT and hang up immediately to avoid wrinkles.

This concert will be a great concert for the whole family. As a special treat, along with the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble, students who were judged “Best of the Room” at this year’s solo and ensemble recitals will be performing their solos and/or ensembles.

This will also be the last time our seniors will perform with The Clear Springs Charger Band.  This means that this concert could be the last time some of these seniors will ever play with a band again, so all family members and friends won’t want to miss it.

Important notes for students and parents:

Uniforms will be worn:

  • Boys – Tuxedo Jacket, tuxedo pants, tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black cummerbund, long black socks, black dress shoes or black marching shoes.
  • Girls – black band dress, black close toed shoes with an inch or less heel.
