Marine Corps Color Detachment

Clear Creek ISD is honored to invite the public to a special performance by the Marine Battle Color Detachment on March 20, 2018 at Clear Creek ISD Challenger Columbia Stadium.

The ceremonial unit from Marine Barracks Washington features “The Commandant’s Own” United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, the Silent Drill Platoon and Marine Corps Color Guard.

This highly skilled unit appears in hundreds of ceremonies around the world each year to demonstrate the discipline, professionalism and “Esprit de Corps” of the United States Marines.

“It is a distinct privilege to welcome the Marine Battle Color Detachment to perform for our students, families and community,” said Greg Goodman, Clear Creek ISD Director of Visual and Performing Arts. “For those who have never had the opportunity to see this ceremony in person, prepare to be impressed and moved.”

Before the ceremony, Clear Creek ISD will also pay tribute to the Galveston County Sherriff Liaison Officers who serve and protect Clear Creek ISD schools, students and staff. Spectators will have the opportunity to go on the field after the conclusion of the ceremony and meet the Marines.

The Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment will perform on March 20, 2018 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Clear Creek ISD Challenger Columbia Stadium. In lieu of an admission charge, the public is invited to bring canned food donations for the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center in Dickinson.

Why Band?

It’s course selection time. I find myself examining why it is so important to me as a parent for my kids to continue on in the band program. I hear other parents saying that their child may be quitting, or my sons tell me that a friend may not coming back next year. I never really gave it a second thought. Why would they NOT want to stay in band forever?

Upon reflection, I realized that my assumptions revolve around my own experiences. I can’t imagine what MY life would have looked like if I had not been in band. Most of MY high school memories are from the band hall and the marching field. The friends I made in high school band are still near and dear to my heart. The directors were mentors who I knew I could count on to be there for me, even when I felt like my “other” teachers were out of touch or out of reach. The band hall was a refuge and I spent every minute I was allowed hanging out there outside of regular school and rehearsal hours. I laughed, I cried, I learned, and I grew from a girl to a young woman in a home away from home, with an extended family I could lean on and laugh with.

Why would I NOT want these things for my own sons? Leave aside for a minute my hopes and dreams for their future with the skills they learn through the hard work and dedication acquired through the rigors required to excel in the band program. For the here and now, I know where my kids are. I know who they’re spending time with. I know the leaders who are helping to shape their hearts and minds. And I know they have a worthy community in which they can grow into confident young men of integrity.

WINTER GUARD

The Colorguard, when we are out of marching season, performs for indoor contests much like the wind and percussion sections of the band. Our Colorguard participates in the Texas Colorguard Circuit, or TCGC, usually in the winter months, and also competes in a state-wide competition in the spring. After marching season, Colorguard moves into the wonderful air conditioning where we create a 3-5 minute show with a certain theme chosen by the director. Auditions and preparation for contest begin in late November, and carry on until the show concept is fully realized. In this show there are many elements of what we do during marching season present, but now with greater detail since the focus is put on guard only, as its own unit. We spin flag, rifle, and saber, and also include body movements and dance in our choreography. The guard performs to a track chosen, and often edited by, the director, that will relate to the meaning of the show.

For this year, our show will be called something along the lines of ‘Baggage Claim’, and is based around creating a visual representation for the baggage one carries with them throughout their life. Every member will hold a suitcase with a word they feel describes their personal baggage, written on the inside, throughout a portion of the show. How we dance and perform is based on how handle our baggage, and whether we choose to accept it, or hide it away. This show will be extremely emotional, and personalized to every member’s individual feelings about their life and the struggles throughout it.

To be able to see the finished show, students and parents can attend one of the Saturday contests listed on the band google calendar in the Colorguard’s color (pink), or attend a dress rehearsal any Friday before a contest, which will be held at the school. Attending TCGC events usually costs $8 per person, and the time and address of the location Clear Springs will be performing can be found on the TCGC website.

Even after marching season, the guard works incredibly hard to put together a show full of meaning, detail, and expression. Every show is a work of art, and it is so rewarding to attend the TCGC competitions and watch multiple schools take their different approaches on what guard can represent. As a team we never have an off season, and would love to have more people involved in what we do. Especially for our show this year, people can really relate to and get attached to the real and raw emotion portrayed, and really witness the diversity and beauty of the winterguard season.

Scholarship Opportunity

Music Doing Good knows that students who study music experience profound cognitive benefits that last a lifetime, evidenced not only by heightened aptitudes in math, science and languages, but also life skills such as collaboration, leadership and critical thinking.

Houston-area music students in 4th-12th grade, who wish to pursue music studies are encouraged to apply for Music Doing Good Scholarships, which provide funding for private lessons, music workshops and tuition through educational institutions. Applications can be submitted electronically at http://musicdoinggood.org/outreach/scholarships/

Scholarships range from $250 to $1500. Materials must be submitted electronically before Wednesday, March 21, 2018.  Awards will be announced by email on Friday, April 13, 2018.  Concerts featuring the top 20 recipients of the 2018 scholarships will take place at University of St. Thomas, Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon, 77006 on Saturday, June 9, 2018.

“Our application review process is carefully designed to acknowledge both talent and the transformative power of music, particularly for students whose financial situation inhibits or prevents the possibility of private lessons.  Family finances and essay questions about the role music plays in the student’s life comprise 70% of the overall score.  Independently screened recordings make up the remaining 30%.  We also encourage students to give back to the community and “do good” with their music by performing in retirement centers and hospitals across the greater Houston area,” states Rodney Waters, Music Doing Good with Scholarships program director.

Jurors include Michael Remson, Executive and Artistic Director of AFA, David Bertman, Associate Professor of Music, The Moores School of Music, Amy Chung, Director of Programs, Houston Youth Symphony and Patrick Moore, member of the Axiom Quartet and cello teacher at The University of St. Thomas.

In the spring of 2017, the largest number of scholarships were awarded in the history of the program; 106 scholarships totaling more than $83,000 in grants. Six of those scholarships mark the first awards granted to students that were supported through a community partnership with a private donor.

Hannah Bilski, a Music Doing Good scholarship recipient and instrument recipient remarks of her experience over the summer, “AFA was truly an amazing experience! I was forced to challenge myself by learning professional level repertoire in three weeks. This bond that music creates is something that constantly reassures me it is what I want to do with my life. The friendships I made and the music I was a part of is something I will never forget. I can honestly say I look forward to returning next summer. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this experience!”

For over twenty years, the American Festival for the Arts (AFA) Summer Music Festival has offered world-class intensive music-making experiences in a supportive environment for Houston’s young musicians. Hannah’s scholarship enabled her to benefit from this outstanding program.

Music Doing Good is a nonprofit arts organization that inspires and transforms lives through innovative, music-based programming and performance experiences. The outreach programs bring musical enrichment to children in Houston’s most disadvantaged communities. The programs use music to stimulate minds, spark creativity and ignite imagination.

Music Doing Good in Schools engages the whole child in an innovative fine-arts program designed to educate and empower students of Title 1 schools, culminating in a dynamic, student-driven performance at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

Music Doing Good with Instruments grants free, gently-used instruments to underserved students and underfunded school districts.

To arrange interviews or for high resolution photos, please contact Julie Lambert at 713.294.9034 orJulie@musicdoinggood.org. For any additional information on the Music Doing Good with Scholarships outreach program, contact Rodney Waters at Rodney@musicdoinggood.org.

INSTRUMENT STEP UP SALES

If you are still playing on the same beginner instrument you have had since 6th grade now is the time to step to a professional level instrument.  This is something we highly recommend if you have not done so already due to the fact that it is much easier to play with a good sound and play in tune on a better instrument.

Both companies have competent representatives who will help you select the best instrument.  We recommend that students be present at the purchase and to have them play on at least two or three of the same model instrument as all instruments are not made the same.  You may also want to upgrade the mouthpiece.  Woodwinds can also upgrade their ligatures and barrels (for clarinet).
